Spring and early autumn: the sweet spots
April to June and September to October are the months we'd pick. April is mild, with highs around 20°C, and you can queue in St Peter's Square without baking. May and June get warmer and sunnier, which suits long days of walking from the Vatican Museums to the Borgo streets nearby.
September and October feel just as good, though rain returns, especially in October. The Sistine Chapel is indoors, so a wet afternoon won't ruin your plans. Still, the climb up St Peter's dome is much nicer on a dry day.
Easter is the big event. Holy Week brings huge crowds, and the Pope's Easter Sunday Mass fills the square. If you want to be there, expect packed streets. If you don't, avoid those days. Easter moves each year, so check the date before you book.
Summer: hot, bright and busy
July and August are the hottest months, tied at 33°C, and they're also the driest. Afternoons are fierce, and there's very little shade in the square. The museum queues can feel long in the heat. Going late in the day, when the museums are quieter, helps a lot. On Wednesdays the Pope usually holds his general audience in the square or in the Paul VI Hall, which adds to the crowds.
Summer is high season, and many Romans leave the city around 15 August, the Assumption holiday (Ferragosto). Some small restaurants close, but the Vatican stays open for visitors. Travelling with kids? Summer works for the long school break, but plan indoor stops for midday.
Winter: grey, damp and quieter
From November to February, you'll get cooler, wetter weather. November is the wettest month by far, with rain on 13 days. January and December are the coldest and have the fewest sunny hours, so evenings feel chilly in the open square.
If you hate crowds, this is your season. Lines are shorter, and the museums feel calmer. The exception is Christmas. Midnight Mass in St Peter's Basilica draws a big crowd, and the nativity scene in the square is a lovely sight through early January. For a quiet trip with a rainy-day plan, February and March are good choices, since both are rated Good.
