When to go to Catania: a seasonal guide
Spring: the sweet spot
March to May is when Catania feels easiest. March is mild and still a bit damp. By April the sun is out most days and the rain has mostly gone. May is warm enough for the sea views and the evening stroll on Via Etnea, but not yet scorching.
Spring is also the best time for Mount Etna. You can hike the upper slopes in a light jacket, and the lower villages are green. Snow may still sit near the summit early in the season, so check which paths and cable car stages are open.
Easter week is the busy moment. Holy Week processions fill the streets, and hotels fill up too. If you hate crowds, aim for late April or May instead.
Summer: hot and bright
June is hot, and July and August are the hardest months. Highs reach 36°C in July, and August nights barely cool down. It's dry, though, with almost no rain in July.
This is beach time. Head to the sandy stretch of La Playa, or ride out to the rocky coast at Aci Trezza, where the sea stacks sit just offshore. Do your sightseeing in the morning. The lava-stone streets around the Fish Market and Piazza del Duomo get very warm by afternoon.
Italian holidays peak around Ferragosto on 15 August. Locals head to the coast, and prices rise. The city itself can feel oddly quiet while the beaches are packed.
Autumn: warm sea, softer days
September is still summery, with warm evenings and a sea that's good for swimming. A few showers start to arrive. October and November turn wetter, with rain on about eleven days a month. Showers often come in short, heavy bursts, and the grey volcanic pavements get slippery.
It's a good season if you like food and fewer people. Look for pistachio-flavoured treats from nearby Bronte, and Etna wines at harvest time. Sightseeing in the Roman theatre and the Benedictine Monastery is much more pleasant than in July.
Winter: quiet and cosy
December to February is mild by northern standards, but it's grey and damp. Daytime sits around 14 to 16°C, and evenings feel chilly indoors. Travelling on a budget? This is when rooms are cheapest and you'll have the sights to yourself.
The big date is 3 to 5 February, the Feast of Saint Agatha. It's one of Sicily's biggest religious festivals. Huge crowds follow the silver relics through the old town, so expect packed streets and a lively mood. If you're coming for it, book your room well ahead.
