When to go to Cagliari: a seasonal guide
Summer: hot, dry and busy
From June to August, Cagliari is sunny and almost rain-free. July and August tie as the hottest months, both at 28°C by day and 24°C at night. July is the driest, with rain on just one day. Afternoons are warm enough that you'll want the sea. Poetto, the long city beach, is the easy choice. It fills up fast, especially around Ferragosto on 15 August, when Italians take their main summer break.
This is high season. Rooms cost more and the ferries from the mainland are full. If you hate crowds, aim for June. It's already warm and sunny, and the beaches are calmer. Some evenings the city feels half empty because locals head to the coast.
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
May and September are the best all-round picks. Days are warm, the sea is swimmable, and you can still walk up through the Castello quarter, the old hilltop district, without melting. May is greener and a bit fresher. September has the warmest water, though rain returns on about seven days.
Late April and early May bring the Festival of Sant'Efisio, a big procession that starts in Cagliari on 1 May. People in traditional dress follow a saint's statue on an ox-drawn cart. It's one of the best things you can see here, and the streets get packed, so arrive early along the route if you want a view.
October is still mild, but it's getting wetter. Sightseeing works well, and beach days become a gamble.
Winter: quiet and mild
Winter here doesn't feel like winter. January and February reach 14°C, which is fine for walking the Roman amphitheatre or the Bastione di Saint Remy. Cafés in the Marina district are easy to get into, and you'll see the city as locals do.
November is the wettest month by far, with 111 mm over 12 days. December is also damp. If you're after beach time, skip these months. If you want museums, long lunches and few other visitors, they work well. Sun is short, only about four to five hours a day, so plan outdoor stops around it.
March and April are rated Excellent for comfort. Expect mild days, some showers and few crowds, which suits a city break.
