Visiting Cagliari in August
August heat
Cagliari's August days are hot, sunny and often sticky, with warm evenings. Rain is rare, so you can count on beach weather, but the midday heat can make Castello's steep lanes and stone sights tiring. Save those walks for later in the day. July is just as hot and drier; September is cooler and wetter.
Poetto is the easy choice for a swim or a long stretch by the sea. You can also visit the Marina quarter in the evening, when dinner feels more comfortable. For families with young children, beach time is easier than a long city walk in the afternoon.
Ferragosto and crowds
August 15 is Ferragosto, a major Italian summer holiday. Cagliari's beaches can fill up, and some local shops and restaurants may close as residents take time off. The city still gets visitors, though, so popular beach spots and accommodation are in high demand.
Compared with May or October, expect more crowds and higher prices, especially around Ferragosto. If you dislike busy beaches, try Poetto earlier in the morning or walk farther along the shore from the main beach area.
A local tip
Take the bus out to Poetto, then follow the waterfront towards the Marina Piccola sailing harbour. It's a pleasant evening stroll, with sea views and places to stop for food. Afterward, try fregula, Sardinian toasted pasta, at a restaurant in the Marina quarter.
August's long sunny days also suit a visit to Molentargius-Saline Park, beside Poetto. But the open paths offer little shade, so save them for a cooler part of the day. Don't plan a full sightseeing circuit under the strongest sun; Cagliari's hills and stone streets feel harder in the heat.
