Ottawa Weather in February

February feels like winter

Ottawa is properly cold in February. Days reach about -5°C, while nights drop to -15°C. The air is often damp and the sky can stay grey, so walking around outdoors may feel tiring. Snow and ice can also make pavements slippery.

The Rideau Canal Skateway is a classic February outing when conditions allow, but don't count on it being open every day. The National Gallery of Canada and Canadian Museum of History make good indoor plans when the cold gets to you. Save long strolls around Parliament Hill for a day when you're comfortable being outside.

Winterlude and winter crowds

Winterlude brings ice sculptures, outdoor activities and events around the city, including near the canal. Dates and activities vary, so check the festival schedule before you go. Family Day, a public holiday in Ontario, also falls in February and can mean more local visitors.

If you hate crowds, visit outside Winterlude events and the Family Day weekend. Ottawa is generally quieter and often cheaper than in summer, though festival weekends can bring a bump in hotel demand.

For a practical Ottawa-only tip, check the Rideau Canal Skateway's official status before setting out. If it's open, use one of its access points near downtown and stop at a BeaverTails stand along the route for the local pastry. If the canal is closed, don't make it the centre of your day; head to the ByWard Market or a museum instead.
