Visiting Oaxaca in July
July: warm, wet afternoons
July feels mild rather than scorching, but frequent rain and sticky air shape your plans. Showers fall on many days, and clouds often soften the views. You can explore the historic centre, browse the covered stalls at Mercado Benito Juárez, or linger over a meal when rain sets in.
Monte Albán works best when the sky is clear; clouds can hide the valley views, and wet paths may be slippery. Leave long hikes for a drier spell. Evenings are cooler, so a walk around Santo Domingo can still feel pleasant.
Guelaguetza crowds
The Guelaguetza, Oaxaca's best-known festival, takes place on Mondays in July. Dance groups from across the state perform at the Guelaguetza Auditorium, and the city gets busier around the celebrations. Events and dates can vary, so check the programme for your visit.
Families who enjoy music and local culture may love the festival, but crowds can make the centre feel hectic. Rooms and flights can cost more around Guelaguetza than in quieter parts of the month. July is generally less popular than the dry-season months from November to February, though festival week is an exception.
A rain-aware day
Compared with June, July brings a little less rain; August is wetter still. That doesn't mean dry days: expect showers to interrupt sightseeing, and don't count on long, sunny stretches for a beach-style break. There's more cloud than sun, so keep a flexible plan.
For a practical local move, visit the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca inside Santo Domingo when rain starts. It's an easy change of pace from outdoor sightseeing, and you can return to the nearby streets when the shower passes. At Mercado 20 de Noviembre, a tlayuda—a large toasted tortilla topped with beans and other fillings—makes a hearty stop between outings.
