Visiting Nuuk in March

March weather in Nuuk

March feels like winter, even though it's classed as spring. Daytime highs reach about -5°C, and nights drop to around -9°C. Snow, sleet and damp cold are common: March gets rain or other precipitation on 12 days, with cloud covering much of the sky. You'll get some daylight, but the sun averages just over three hours a day.

That suits town days, museums and short walks on clear, settled days. The Greenland National Museum is a good stop when the weather turns rough. Avoid setting out on exposed mountain trails without local advice; icy ground and low cloud can make routes difficult.

Things to do and events

Nuuk Snow Festival is often held in March, though dates can vary. It brings snow and ice sculptures into the city, making a stroll to see them a fun addition to a town visit. Check whether it's on during your trip.

If you hate crowds, March is a quieter choice than July and August, Nuuk's best-known summer months. Demand is generally lower, so you may find accommodation and flights less costly than in peak summer. The trade-off is a colder, cloudier visit and fewer easy outdoor days.

Make the most of your stay

Travelling with kids? Keep a museum visit in reserve for a wet, windy day, and use clear spells for a short walk around the old harbour. Conditions can change quickly, so don't count on a long hike fitting neatly into your plans.

A useful local tip: check the weather before walking up to the viewpoint at Quassussuaq, also called Lille Malene. In March, snow and ice can make the climb much tougher than it looks from town. If conditions are poor, the National Museum offers a warm way to learn about Greenland instead.
