Best Time to Visit Nuku'alofa
Tonga · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
If you want the most pleasant weather in Nuku'alofa, plan your trip for July to September. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 23°C and 27°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over January to April; March is the wettest month with about 221 mm (8.7 in) of rain. March is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Nuku'alofa: a seasonal guide
January to April: hot, wet and sticky
This is the rainy season, and you'll feel it. Days are warm and heavy, and nights barely cool down. Rain falls on most days, often in big downpours rather than light drizzle. The humidity sits above 80%, so even a short walk along the Nuku'alofa waterfront leaves you damp.
It's also cyclone season in the South Pacific. Storms don't hit every year, but they can close flights and ferries to the outer islands. If you come now, keep your plans loose and your travel insurance sorted. On the plus side, it's quiet. April is the easiest month of the four, with fewer wet days.
May to October: the best stretch
July, August and September score Excellent, and they earn it. Days are mild, nights are comfortable, and there's less rain. July is the driest of the three at 61 mm. You can walk around town, visit the Royal Palace's grounds (you can only see it from outside) and head to the Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, a huge stone gateway on the main island's east side, without being soaked.
This is also whale season. Humpbacks come to Tongan waters to breed and calve, and swimming with them is the big draw. It runs roughly from July to October, so those are the busiest months. Tours and guesthouses fill up, especially in Vava'u, where many whale trips are based. If you hate crowds, try June or early October instead. June is Good, and October is Fair with a bit more rain.
November and December: warming up
Things get warmer and wetter, but you still get the most sunshine of the year, with December the brightest at 4.5 hours a day. It's a decent time for beach days at the island's calm spots, and you'll often have them mostly to yourself.
Late December is when Tongans living abroad come home for Christmas, so flights and family-run stays can fill up. Church services are a big part of Sunday and festive life here, with singing that's worth hearing. Shops and most businesses close on Sundays, so plan around that in any month.
The Heilala Festival, held around early July for the king's birthday, brings parades, music and sports to Nuku'alofa. It lands right in the best weather, so book a bed early if you want to catch it.
