Best Time to Visit Mata-Utu
Wallis and Futuna · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
If you want the most pleasant weather in Mata-Utu, plan your trip for July to September. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 28°C and 29°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over December to February; January is the wettest month with about 321 mm (12.6 in) of rain. February is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Mata-Utu: a seasonal guide
Wet and warm, all year
Mata-Utu sits on Uvea island, close to the equator. Temperatures barely move. It's warm day and night in every month, and the nights hardly cool down. The real change is the rain.
From December to February, it rains on almost every day. January is the wettest month, with 321 mm. Expect heavy downpours, damp air and not much sun. Cyclone season runs roughly November to April, so check forecasts if you travel then.
The drier months
July to September is your best window. It's still humid, but rain drops to around 86 to 88 mm a month. July is the only month our score rates Good. August and September tie for the driest, and September has the most sun. Showers still come on about half the days, so don't expect a dry spell.
June and October are decent shoulder months. June is Fair and getting drier. October starts to turn wet again.
Which trip, which month
If you want to swim and snorkel in Uvea's lagoon, go from July to September. You'll also get the best chance of a clear walk to Lake Lalolalo, a deep, steep-sided crater lake on the island. The Talietumu ruins, an old Tongan-style fortress, are easier to explore on drier ground. Paths get slick and muddy in the wet season.
If you're after culture, think about timing around Catholic feast days. The church is central here, and the big Mata-Utu cathedral fills for major services. The kingdom's Bastille Day events on 14 July, a French public holiday, also fall in the good weather window. Expect dancing and local feasts, but don't count on big-resort-style entertainment.
Hoping to see Wallis and Futuna in the wet months? You can, but pack patience. Plans change with the weather, and flights and boats can be disrupted.
Crowds and seasons
This is not a mass tourism island. Even in the best months, you'll see few other visitors. Beaches are quiet, and guesthouses are small. Most visitors are family returning from Nouméa, Tahiti or France, so school holidays and Christmas can fill flights and rooms. Southern Hemisphere winter holidays in July and August are another busy time for those links. If you want a seat, sort out flights early, since services are limited.
For the best mix of weather and calm, aim for September.
