Best Time to Visit Alofi
Niue · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Alofi is June to August, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 25°C and 28°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over January to April; January is the wettest month with about 224 mm (8.8 in) of rain. January is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Alofi: a seasonal guide
The dry season: June to September
This is the best stretch, and the data agrees. Days sit around 25°C, and rain falls on about 13 days a month in June, July and August. That's still a fair few showers, but they tend to pass quickly. September is nearly as good, though rain days creep up to 16.
Niue is all about the sea, and this is when it works best. Snorkelling in Limu Pools and Matapa Chasm is easy, and the reef water is famously clear. From July to October, humpback whales pass through. People swim with them here, which is rare. Ask a local operator about the rules, because only licensed guides run these trips.
If you're after hiking, the coastal tracks to Togo Chasm and Anapala Chasm are far more pleasant in cooler, drier weather. The sea tracks (rocky paths down to the shore) get slippery after rain.
The wet season: January to April
Be honest with yourself here. It's hot, sticky and grey. Highs are 27–28°C, nights barely cool down, and humidity stays above 80%. January and February are the wettest, both with 224 mm, and rain falls on most days.
This is also cyclone season in the South Pacific. Flights can be disrupted, and Niue's small size means few backup options. If you come, take travel insurance and keep your dates loose. The upside? Almost no other visitors. If you like empty roads and don't mind wet afternoons, you'll have the reef nearly to yourself.
April is a turning point. Rain eases to 163 mm, and the rating moves up to Fair.
The shoulder months: May, October to December
May and October are decent compromises. They're warm, with fewer showers than summer, and they suit travellers who want lower crowds. October still catches the end of whale season.
November and December rate Poor, as rain days climb back toward 20. Even so, December can be tempting if you want to spend Christmas somewhere very quiet.
Crowds and events
Niue is small, with only a few places to stay, so "high season" means a handful of visitors rather than crowds. Beds and rental cars fill up in the dry months, especially during whale season. Book those early.
Constitution Day celebrations in October mark Niue's 1974 self-government. Expect singing, dancing and community feasts in and around Alofi. It's a great time to meet locals, and you'll still get reasonable weather.
