Best Time to Visit Funafuti

A year that's always warm and often wet

Funafuti sits just south of the equator on a thin strip of coral. The temperature barely moves all year. Days reach about 29°C and nights only drop to 28°C. So the real question is how much rain you'll get, not how hot it is.

Our comfort score rates almost every month Poor, and October is the only Fair one. That's not a warning to stay away. It just means you should expect sticky, damp air and cloud wherever you go.

Wet season and drier months

From December to February the rain really sets in. February is the wettest month, with 321 mm, and December through February see rain on 24 to 26 days. Sunshine drops to around two hours a day. This is also the time of year when tropical cyclones are most likely in the South Pacific, so flights and boats can be disrupted. Check your return plans carefully.

From June to October things ease. September is the driest month, with 124 mm, and gets the most sun at about five hours a day. October is our top pick, with a similar feel, though rain is a little higher. Showers still pass through, but they tend to be short, and you'll get more clear spells for the lagoon.

Which suits you? If you want snorkelling or a boat trip across the lagoon, aim for September or October. If you don't mind grey skies and just want a quiet stay, the wet months work too.

Crowds, events and practical tips

Funafuti doesn't have a tourist high season. Few visitors come at any time, and many are on work or aid trips. You won't fight for beach space. The bigger issue is flights, which are limited, so seats can fill with people travelling for work or family. Book those first and fit the rest around them.

The biggest date is 1 October, Tuvalu's Independence Day. Expect singing, dancing and community feasts, with a lively feel around the island. It's another good reason to pick October. Early in the year, the Christmas and New Year period is also big for church services and gatherings.

Day to day, life centres on the airstrip. Locals play football and volleyball on it in the late afternoon, and it's a fine place to watch sunset. Rent a motorbike to ride the length of the main island in minutes, then take a boat out to the lagoon's small islets for the best swimming.
