When to visit Tonga
One city, two seasons
Nuku'alofa, on the main island of Tongatapu, is the only place on our list, and its year splits into two clear halves. July to September is the best window. The air is warmer than you'd think for winter, the humidity drops, and the sea is still fine for swimming. The rest of the year is hotter and stickier, and rain is more likely.
Tonga stretches a long way north. Ha'apai and Vava'u sit well away from the capital, and their weather can differ a little. We only have figures for Nuku'alofa, so treat this guide as the baseline and check forecasts for the islands you plan to visit.
The wet, hot months
February is the hottest month at 27°C. March is the wettest, with 221 mm of rain. Expect sticky afternoons, heavy showers and a bigger chance of cyclones, which are the big tropical storms of the South Pacific. Roads can flood and boats may not run.
If you're on a tight budget, this is the quiet season. You'll get empty guesthouses and few other visitors at the Talamahu Market. You'll also need a flexible plan, because ferries and flights to the outer islands can be cancelled at short notice.
Whales, holidays and crowds
The big draw in the cool season is humpback whales. They arrive from around July and stay into October. Swimming with them is a major reason people head to Vava'u, so those months are high season. Travelling with kids? School holidays in New Zealand and Australia fall in this window too, so flights fill up.
Tonga also has its own dates that matter. The Heilala Festival is held in Nuku'alofa in July, with parades, music and sports, and it's tied to the king's birthday. Sunday is a day of rest across the country. Shops close, and swimming and sports are frowned upon, so plan your Sundays around church, a long lunch and a quiet beach.
Want whales, dry air and a lively week in town? Come in July. Prefer fewer people and don't mind a risk of rain? Try October or November, when the crowds thin out and the heat hasn't yet peaked.
