December: mild winter days

December is a comfortable time to explore Mexicali. Afternoons reach around 21°C, while evenings can feel chilly at 8°C. Rain is limited, but a few wet days are possible. You'll get plenty of useful daylight for walking around the city and visiting the Museo Sol del Niño.

The cooler weather makes outdoor sightseeing much easier than in summer. A stroll through the historic centre or a meal in La Chinesca can fit nicely into the day. Save long outdoor plans for daylight, and don't count on warm evenings for sitting outside.

Christmas in Mexicali

December brings Christmas celebrations and posadas, traditional gatherings with songs and food. You may see seasonal events around town, though celebrations vary by neighbourhood. Christmas Day is quieter, and some shops and restaurants may close or shorten their hours.

If you hate crowds, avoid relying on the border crossing or busy shopping areas during the Christmas holiday rush. Mexicali is a working city, so it doesn't feel like a resort packed with seasonal visitors. Prices can rise around the holidays, but December isn't automatically more expensive than every other month.

Easy days, cosy nights

December is part of Mexicali's more pleasant travel season, which runs from November to March. It's far less punishing for sightseeing than the hot months. Compared with November, though, afternoons are cooler and rain is more likely. January has similar weather to December.

Travelling with kids? The mild afternoons suit a visit to Museo Sol del Niño, while the cooler evenings are better spent indoors. For a local meal, head to La Chinesca for Mexicali-style Chinese food, a distinctive part of the city's food scene. Keep that stop for lunchtime if you'd rather not walk around the historic area after dark.
