Mexicali Weather in September

September's lingering heat

September still feels like summer in Mexicali. Afternoons can reach 40°C, while nights stay warm at around 24°C. Rain is scarce, falling on only two days on average, so don't expect a shower to cool things down.

Outdoor sightseeing is best kept to the cooler parts of the day. Save Centro Cívico's museums and indoor stops for the afternoon, and avoid long walks across the city in the heat. Evenings work better for sampling Mexicali's famous Chinese food in La Chinesca.

If you're travelling with kids, plan indoor breaks rather than a full day outside.

Fiestas and quieter streets

Mexico's Independence Day falls on September 16, with celebrations in cities across the country. Mexicali's annual Fiestas del Sol fair can also run around September and October, though dates vary. It brings rides, food stalls and local entertainment, along with bigger crowds near the fairgrounds.

Away from the fair and holiday events, September is generally quieter than Mexicali's cooler winter months. You may find better-value stays than during the November-to-March high season. The trade-off is the heat: nearby Tijuana and San Diego offer much more comfortable weather if you want a cooler city break.

Make the heat easier

Use taxis or a car for trips between sights during the hottest part of the day. For a local stop, visit La Chinesca, the historic Chinese district, in the evening and try the city's Chinese-Mexican cuisine. It's a practical way to enjoy a distinctive part of Mexicali without spending the afternoon walking between venues.

If Fiestas del Sol is on during your visit, go after sunset, when the fair is more pleasant and lively. Check its dates before you travel, as they change from year to year.
