Marseille is generally quieter in December than during the summer holiday season. You'll find fewer visitors around the Vieux-Port, and stays are often cheaper than in peak summer. Christmas week can bring more local visitors and a livelier feel around the markets, though. April to June and September to October are usually better for warm-weather sightseeing.

If you're visiting Château d'If, check the ferry's service before heading to the Vieux-Port. Wind and rough seas can affect crossings, and a winter trip is less forgiving if the boat doesn't run. Keep a backup plan, such as the MuCEM nearby.
