February: hot and showery

February feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Afternoon rain is common, so long outdoor plans can be uncomfortable, and showers may interrupt walks along the waterfront. You'll still find time for Maputo's markets, Praça da Independência and a seafood lunch; keep flexible plans for wetter spells.

The Museu de História Natural is a useful indoor stop when rain sets in. Its famous elephant displays make it more than just a place to wait out a shower. For families, it's an easy change of pace from hot streets and wet pavements.

Carnival and Heroes' Day

Carnival often falls in February, though its timing changes each year. Maputo's parades bring music and dancing to the streets, but rain can affect outdoor festivities. Mozambique's Heroes' Day, on 3 February, is a public holiday; some businesses and services may close.

Quieter summer days

February is still summer, with frequent rain and high humidity. It's not the best month for long walks or a beach day that depends on clear skies. January is wetter, while March gets less rain; May to September is generally better for comfortable sightseeing.

You'll usually find fewer visitors and better-value stays than in the popular May-to-September period. A practical tip: after rain, visit the Museu de História Natural rather than heading to Tunduru Gardens, where paths can be muddy. Check local opening times, especially around the holiday.
