December feels hot and damp

Maputo's summer weather is sticky, with highs around 32°C and warm nights. Rain falls often, and thick cloud can interrupt your plans. November is a little drier; January is wetter still.

A morning walk around Baixa or the Railway Station can work well, but keep indoor stops in mind. Heavy showers can make long outings less pleasant, and December isn't the easiest month for a beach day at Costa do Sol. Families may prefer short outings, with time for a cool break at the Maputo Shopping Centre.

Christmas and summer crowds

Christmas Day and New Year's Day bring public holidays, and many locals spend time with family or head to the coast. Expect some shops and services to close or run on shorter hours around those days. Don't count on every restaurant being open.

December falls in the summer holiday period, so popular coastal stays can be busier and pricier than in the quieter months from May to September. Maputo itself can feel less packed than beach resorts, but hotel rates may still climb over the holidays. For a calmer city break, consider another month.

Keep plans flexible

Rain may pass quickly, or linger long enough to change your day. Leave room to swap an outdoor stroll for the Natural History Museum or a meal of peri-peri prawns in the Polana area. The long daylight helps, but cloud and showers can make the afternoon feel close and grey.

For couples keen on a waterfront meal, choose a spot along Avenida Marginal, then take a taxi back if rain sets in. The road runs beside Maputo Bay, but puddles and traffic can make walking along it less appealing after a downpour. Don't treat December as a reliable month for dry sightseeing; May to September is a better bet.
