When to go to Maputo: a seasonal guide
Two seasons: hot and wet, cool and dry
Maputo's year splits in two. From about December to March it's hot, sticky and rainy. Afternoons feel heavy, and January is the wettest month, with rain on 19 days. Showers are often short but loud, and the streets of Baixa (the old downtown) can flood.
From May to September it's the opposite. Days are warm, nights are cool, and the air feels lighter. July is the coolest month, with highs of 26°C and lows of 14°C. Rain is rare, so you can walk the city without watching the sky.
Which month for which trip
For a city break, aim for May to September. You can wander the Baixa, see the iron house and the grand railway station, and browse the Feira de Artesanato (craft market) at Praça 25 de Junho. Then you can sit outside for grilled prawns and a cold 2M beer without sweating through your shirt.
Want beach time? April, May, September and October are the sweet spot. It's warm enough to swim off Catembe or on Inhaca Island, and the ferry rides are pleasant. June to August can feel chilly on the water, especially in the evening wind.
Hate heat? Skip December to February. Humidity stays high, and the sun is often hidden by cloud. October is a good shoulder month, with mild days and only a few showers.
Crowds, seasons and events
Maputo isn't a mass-tourism city, so crowds are rarely a problem. The busiest time is the dry winter, when South Africans drive up for short breaks and divers and whale-watchers head to the coast. December and January bring family visitors and school holidays, so flights and hotels fill up even though the weather is at its worst.
Some dates are worth knowing. Independence Day on 25 June is a national holiday, with ceremonies and a festive feel around the city centre. The Marrabenta music scene, Maputo's own dance style, is lively all year, but outdoor shows are easier in the dry months. Early in the year, Carnival-style celebrations and rain tend to overlap, so pack a poncho if you go.
If you want one simple answer, pick June to August for the driest, calmest weather. Pick May or September for slightly warmer days and a little more room to breathe.
