When to go to Matola: a seasonal guide
Dry season: May to September
This is the sweet spot. Days are warm and sunny, and the nights turn cool enough that you'll want a light jacket on a terrace in the evening. July is the coolest month, with highs of 26°C and lows of 14°C. Rain is rare, and the air feels less sticky than the rest of the year.
It's the best time for walking around town and for day trips. Matola sits right next to Maputo, so you can hop on a chapa (a shared minibus) into the city for the Fish Market and the old Baixa district. From Maputo you can also catch the ferry to Inhaca Island for snorkelling. Calm, clear days make the crossing much nicer.
Crowds stay modest, since Matola isn't a big tourist stop. The busier time is around the South African school holidays in June and July, when more visitors pass through Maputo and prices in the city can edge up.
October to April: warm, then wet
October and April are the shoulder months. Both rate Excellent, with highs of 30°C and 29°C. Rain is lighter than in midsummer, though October can bring a few grey, showery days. If you want warm beach weather without the busiest weeks, these are good picks. Nights in April are mild, and the city feels quieter.
From November the heat and humidity build. December to February is the wet peak, with rain on up to 19 days in January. The rain often comes as heavy afternoon downpours that can flood dirt roads. Sunshine drops to under five hours a day in December. If you're travelling then, plan your outdoor time for mornings and keep afternoons for a long lunch of prawns with piri-piri, the local chilli sauce.
Events through the year
Mozambique's Independence Day on 25 June falls in the best weather window. Expect flags, music and parades in Maputo, and a festive mood in Matola too. Heritage and music events in Maputo are often easiest to enjoy in the dry months, when outdoor stages aren't rained off.
Travelling with kids? Aim for May or September. You'll get sunny days and cooler evenings, but not the school-holiday rush of mid-year. If you want the very driest weather and don't mind busier roads, go in July or August.
