Visiting Makkah in August
August heat
Makkah in August is intensely hot. Daytime highs reach 43°C, and nights stay warm, around 29°C. The air is fairly dry, but that won't make walking in the sun comfortable. Rain is rare, so don't count on a shower to cool things down.
Keep outdoor sightseeing brief and save the hottest part of the day for an air-conditioned hotel or the Abraj Al Bait shopping mall. The Grand Mosque has indoor areas, but getting there and moving around outside can still feel hard in the heat. If you're visiting Jabal al-Nour, where the Cave of Hira sits, avoid the climb in August.
Crowds and timing
August has no fixed annual festival date in Makkah. Hajj follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so it can fall in August in some years, but not every year. Check the dates for your travel year: Hajj brings major crowds and can change access and prices across the city.
Outside Hajj, August is generally less busy than Ramadan and the Hajj season, and hotel rates may be lower than during those peak periods. Still, summer school holidays can bring families, and Umrah continues year-round. If you hate crowds, choose quieter prayer times and avoid assuming August will be empty.
Make the visit easier
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor journeys short and build rest breaks into the day. August's long, sunny days can make even a short walk feel draining.
For the Grand Mosque, use the air-conditioned Abraj Al Bait complex as a sheltered route between nearby shops, food and the mosque area. It's also a useful place to pause before heading back outdoors. Try local Makkawi food, such as saleeg, a creamy rice dish, at an indoor restaurant rather than planning a long meal outside. The weather data rates August poorly for comfort, so treat sightseeing as a small part of the day, not a packed schedule.
