Best Time to Visit Makkah
Saudi Arabia · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
Weather-wise, January is the best time to visit Makkah. June is the hottest month, with average highs of 44°C (112°F), while January is the coldest, with lows around 17°C (62°F). It's a dry place, with only about 64 mm (2.5 in) of rain in a typical year. June is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the heat.
When to go to Makkah: a seasonal guide
Cool season: December to February
This is the easy stretch. January is the best month on our scores, and December is rated Excellent too. Days are warm rather than punishing, and nights feel mild. Walking between the Haram (the Grand Mosque) and your hotel won't leave you drained. February is Good, and it's the driest of the three, with almost no rain.
Makkah is a holy city, and only Muslims can enter it. If you're making umrah (the lesser pilgrimage, which can be done any time of year), these months suit you well. They're also popular, so expect busy tawaf (circling the Kaaba) and full hotels near the mosque.
Hot months: March to November
March is Fair, and it's still pleasant in the morning and evening. By April the heat builds, and May to September is the hardest stretch. June is the hottest month at 44°C. July, August and September all sit at 43°C, with lows of 29°C, so nights bring little relief. The air is dry, so it feels like an oven rather than a steam room.
Pilgrims still come in these months, and the mosque runs cooling systems and shaded areas. Many people shift their worship to night and the hours around dawn. If you can choose, avoid midsummer. Older travellers and anyone with health problems will find it tough.
October is Poor, though it's easing, and November is Fair. Both are good times to look for quieter, cooler days.
Hajj, Ramadan and crowds
The calendar that really drives crowds here is the Islamic one, not the weather. Hajj, the major annual pilgrimage, happens in Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic year. Because that calendar moves about eleven days earlier each year, Hajj drifts through the seasons. In some years it falls in the hottest months.
Ramadan is the other peak. Many pilgrims come for umrah then, especially in the last ten nights, so the Haram is packed. It's deeply moving, but you'll be in a crowd.
Want more space? Aim for a cooler month that doesn't overlap with Ramadan or Hajj. Check the Islamic dates for your year first. School holidays across the Gulf and beyond also push numbers up, so a quieter week may be easier to find outside those breaks.
