December: cold and damp

Lucerne feels properly wintry in December. Days reach about 4°C, while nights can fall to -2°C. Rain falls on 15 days, and skies are often cloudy, so the lakeside can feel chilly and grey.

You'll still enjoy the Chapel Bridge, the painted old-town squares and the Swiss Museum of Transport. But with only 8.3 hours of daylight, there's less time for long outings. Skip ambitious mountain hikes if the forecast is wet; save the views from Mount Pilatus or Rigi for a clearer day.

Christmas in the old town

The Christmas market at Franziskanerplatz brings wooden stalls and seasonal food to the old town. It's a lovely stop after visiting the nearby Jesuit Church, especially when the early evening turns cold. Swiss Christmas celebrations peak on 24 and 25 December, so some shops and restaurants may close or shorten their hours.

If you hate crowds, visit the market on a weekday afternoon rather than around Christmas Eve.

Crowds and a local tip

December is generally quieter than Lucerne's busy summer season, but the market and holiday period draw visitors. Prices don't necessarily fall with the crowds: Lucerne is a costly city, and festive dates can be in demand. November is milder, while January is a little colder and less rainy, according to the weather figures.

For a practical warm-up, duck into the covered arcade beneath Chapel Bridge after a lakeside walk. It keeps you close to the river and the old town without committing to another exposed stretch. If the clouds lift, a short boat ride on Lake Lucerne can still make a memorable winter outing.
