Visiting Lucerne in March
March weather in Lucerne
March feels chilly and changeable, with daytime highs around 9°C and nights near 1°C. Rain falls on about 14 days, and cloudy skies are common, so Lake Lucerne may look grey rather than postcard-blue. February is colder and drier; April is milder but wetter.
You can still enjoy the Chapel Bridge, the old town's painted buildings and museums between showers. A lake boat trip can be lovely on a clear day, but don't make it the centrepiece of your visit: wind, rain and low cloud can spoil the views. Higher mountain routes may also feel wintry, so check local conditions before setting out.
Events and seasonal feel
Lucerne's Fasnacht carnival is a major local event, with parades, costumes and brass bands. It usually takes place before Lent, so it may fall in February rather than March. If its dates overlap your trip, expect a livelier city centre and book your stay early.
Outside carnival dates, March is quieter than the peak summer months. You'll generally find fewer visitors around the Chapel Bridge and lakefront, and accommodation can cost less than during busy summer periods. It's a good fit if you'd rather explore at your own pace than share every view with crowds.
If you hate crowds, March can suit you—just accept that the weather won't always cooperate.
A useful local tip
Keep the Rosengart Collection in mind for a rainy afternoon. It's close to Lucerne station and has works by Picasso and Paul Klee, making it an easy stop between the old town and the lake.
For a clear spell, take the train from Lucerne to Vitznau and ride the Rigi Railway up the mountain. Cloud can hide the lake views, though, so keep the outing flexible. At dinner, try Luzerner Chügelipastete, a local puff-pastry pie often filled with veal and mushrooms.
