December's deep freeze

Krasnoyarsk is properly cold in December. Days average around -13°C, nights around -20°C, and the damp air can make the chill feel sharper. Much of the month's precipitation falls as snow. You'll get only a short window of daylight, with little sunshine, so outdoor sightseeing takes more effort.

The city's museums and cafés make good stops between brisk walks around the historic centre. If you want a winter landscape, try a short visit to the lower trails at Stolby Nature Reserve, but don't treat a long hike as a casual outing in this cold. The steep, icy paths can be hard going.

New Year in the city

New Year is the big December holiday in Russia. Krasnoyarsk's central streets and squares take on festive decorations, and the days around New Year can feel busier than the rest of the month. Orthodox Christmas falls in January, not December.

If you hate crowds, visit earlier in the month and enjoy the quieter museums and streets. December is generally a low-season month compared with Krasnoyarsk's popular summer, though demand can rise around New Year. Don't assume every restaurant or attraction keeps its usual hours during the holiday period.

Make the cold work for you

A short walk to Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel gives you a memorable view over the city and the Yenisei. Keep the outing brief, then warm up indoors rather than trying to cover several exposed viewpoints in one go. The river and surrounding landscape look stark and wintry, but the cold isn't ideal for lingering outside.

Travelling with kids? Build the day around one outdoor stop and an indoor visit, such as the Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum. That way, a quick look at the snowy streets won't have to become a long, uncomfortable march.
