October weather

October feels warm and humid, but less oppressive than September. Days reach about 28°C, with around seven rainy days and plenty of cloud. Showers can interrupt a walk, but they're less of a daily worry than in the wetter month before.

It's a good time to explore the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, browse the shops around Mong Kok, or take the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour. Save long, exposed walks for clearer spells, and don't count on a full day of beach weather. If you want cooler air and less rain, November is a better bet.

Festivals and crowds

Hong Kong's National Day falls on October 1. Fireworks over Victoria Harbour are a regular feature when the display goes ahead, and the Kowloon waterfront gives you a front-row view. Mainland China's Golden Week holiday also starts around then, so Tsim Sha Tsui and popular shopping streets can feel packed.

If you hate crowds, avoid the waterfront around the fireworks and the busiest Golden Week days. October is a popular time to visit, so expect more competition for hotel rooms than in quieter summer months. It's not peak winter season, though, and November to February is generally the more popular stretch.

Getting around Kowloon in October

October's mix of warm days and occasional showers suits city sightseeing better than a hike with no shelter. Duck into the Hong Kong Museum of Art if rain rolls in; it's right by the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. For a local food stop, try clay-pot rice in Yau Ma Tei, especially on a cooler evening.

Travelling with kids? Take the Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central for a short harbour ride, then head back before the evening crowds build. Check the ferry's service notices if fireworks are planned, since event arrangements can affect harbour traffic.
