Visiting Kota Kinabalu in July
July: warm and very wet
July feels warm, sticky and often cloudy in Kota Kinabalu. Rain falls on many days, and the sun is limited, so build your plans around showers rather than expecting long, clear afternoons. June is a little less rainy, while August is slightly drier.
You can still visit the Sabah State Museum or browse the Filipino Market between showers. Boat trips to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park may work when the sea is calm, but rain can disrupt crossings and spoil clear views from the islands. Don't count on a dry day for a long walk up Signal Hill.
What to do, and what to skip
For families, the indoor galleries at the Sabah State Museum make a useful rainy-day stop.
July sometimes brings the Sabah International Folklore Festival, a dance and music event in Kota Kinabalu. Its dates can vary, so check whether it falls during your visit. Kaamatan, Sabah's best-known harvest festival, is held in May, not July.
The high humidity can make a full day of sightseeing feel tiring. Keep island visits flexible, and avoid planning a tight schedule around a boat departure or an outdoor event.
Crowds and local tips
July is generally calmer than February, one of the best months overall, and you may find better-value stays than during busier travel periods. It isn't empty, though: local school breaks and the folklore festival can bring more visitors.
If you're visiting the Filipino Market, go in the evening for grilled seafood and a cooler stroll along the waterfront. After heavy rain, allow extra time to reach the market, as wet roads can slow traffic.
