Visiting Kota Kinabalu in May
May: warm and wet
May feels hot, sticky and often cloudy in Kota Kinabalu. Rain falls on many days, and the sun only breaks through for short stretches. Showers can interrupt walks around the waterfront, but you can still visit the Sabah State Museum or browse the stalls at Gaya Street Sunday Market.
The sea and islands off Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park are still a draw, but rain and cloud can make boat trips less appealing. Keep outdoor plans flexible, and don't count on clear views from the waterfront. For a hike up Mount Kinabalu, wet trails and cloud may make May less rewarding.
Kaamatan and local life
May brings Kaamatan, Sabah's harvest festival. Celebrations build towards the end of the month, with traditional music, dance and food at the Hongkod Koisaan cultural centre in Penampang. It's a good chance to try hinava, a local dish of raw fish cured with lime.
Families who enjoy cultural events may find Kaamatan more memorable than a beach day, though rain can affect outdoor celebrations. The festival draws local visitors, but May is generally quieter than the drier February period.
Fewer visitors, rainy-day plans
May is a wetter, less popular time to visit than February, so you may find fewer tourists and better hotel deals. Prices vary, though, and Kaamatan can bring a busier feel around Penampang. Compared with April, May is much rainier; June is wetter still.
A practical move: use the covered walkways at Imago Shopping Mall when a shower hits, then head to the nearby waterfront for seafood when it clears. If you're hoping for long, sunny island days, May may test your patience.
