Mild days for exploring

November is one of Kobe's best months to visit. Days feel cool and comfortable, while evenings turn chilly. Rain usually comes on a handful of days, so showers can interrupt outdoor plans, but they're not a reason to stay indoors all week.

You can stroll through Kitano's old foreign residences, visit the waterfront around Meriken Park, or take the ropeway up to Nunobiki Herb Gardens for autumn views. The shorter days leave less time for long hikes, and wet paths near Nunobiki Falls can be slippery. Save a rainy afternoon for the Kobe City Museum or a meal in Nankinmachi, Kobe's Chinatown.

Autumn events and crowds

Kobe Marathon is held in November, drawing runners and spectators. Roads along the course can close, so check the route before crossing town on race day. Shichi-Go-San, a Japanese celebration for children aged three, five and seven, also falls in November. You may spot families in traditional dress at Ikuta Shrine.

Autumn leaves bring visitors to popular sights, especially on weekends. Still, November is generally calmer than the summer holiday period, and prices are often less pressured than during Japan's spring travel peak. Rooms near Sannomiya can cost more around the marathon or busy foliage weekends, so compare dates if you're watching your budget.

A local tip

For couples who enjoy a quiet walk, head to Nunobiki Falls on a weekday. Take the ropeway uphill, then walk down towards Shin-Kobe Station; the route passes the falls and saves you from climbing the full slope.

Keep a little room in your day for weather changes. Kobe's harbour is lovely in clear light, but a cloudy afternoon can make the views from Mount Rokko less rewarding. Before riding up, check visibility from the city centre.
