Best Time to Visit Kingston
Jamaica · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Kingston is December to April, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 28°C and 30°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over June and August to October; October is the wettest month with about 172 mm (6.8 in) of rain. August is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Kingston: a seasonal guide
December to April: the dry, easy months
This is the best stretch, and the data agrees. Days are warm but not heavy, nights are comfortable, and rain is short and rare. February is the driest month, with March close behind for sun. By April it's getting hotter and the showers creep back.
It's also high season. Many visitors come to escape winter, and Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks. Reggae fans should aim for February, when Bob Marley's birthday on the 6th brings events to the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road. Travelling with kids? This is the easiest time for a day trip up to the Blue Mountains, where you'll get clearer views and drier trails. Kingston itself is mostly a business and culture city, so it never feels as swamped as Montego Bay or Negril.
May to July: hotter, wetter, cheaper
Rain picks up in May and June, with showers on more than half the days. They tend to be heavy and short. Humidity makes afternoons sticky, so plan museums, the National Gallery and a long lunch of jerk or escovitch fish for the wettest hours. July is a nice surprise. It's a little drier and sunnier than the months around it.
Crowds are thinner, and hotels are often easier to book. If you like Kingston's music scene, this is a good value time. Just keep your plans loose.
August to November: the wet and risky season
August to October is the wettest stretch, and October is the wettest month of all, with rain on most days. It's also the heart of hurricane season in the Caribbean, so check forecasts and get travel insurance that covers storms. Roads can flood, and mountain trips often get cancelled.
That said, you can still have a good trip if you're flexible. August brings Emancipation and Independence celebrations, with street parties and concerts around the 1st and 6th. These are a big draw for Jamaicans living abroad, so flights can fill up even in the rainy months. November is calmer, and showers ease off by December.
If you want the best odds, go between December and April. For quieter streets and lower prices, try early July.
