March is warm and mostly sunny, with afternoons that suit walking Old Town, cycling past pastel houses or taking a snorkelling trip. The sea breeze helps, but the air can still feel sticky, especially around midday. Rain is usually brief, so a passing shower needn't derail your plans.

You'll get plenty of daylight for Fort Zachary Taylor and a sunset at Mallory Square. Skip long, exposed walks in the hottest part of the day; save them for later. The water is inviting, though some visitors may find it cool for a long swim.

Festivals and spring break

The Key West Sidewalk Art Festival usually brings artists and crowds to Old Town in March. Spring break also draws college students and families, so Duval Street and popular beaches can feel busy.

If you hate crowds, choose quieter mornings at the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, then visit Mallory Square before sunset rather than during the rush. Travelling with kids? A glass-bottom boat trip is an easy way to see the reef without getting in the water.

Crowds and getting around

March is still part of the busy winter-to-spring season. Expect higher hotel prices and more people than in quieter summer and autumn months, especially during spring-break weeks. It's generally less of a winter peak than January and February, but don't expect a quiet island.

For a practical photo stop, the Southernmost Point buoy often has a queue. Walk a little farther along South Street for ocean views while you wait, then return when the line thins. On Duval Street, walking is easier than searching for a parking spot.
