May: damp days

May is warm but often feels grey and sticky. Rain falls on many days, and cloud often hides the sun. Showers can interrupt a long walk around the city, so keep outdoor plans flexible. Kampala's hills and steep streets can get slippery; save a walk between Nakasero and the Old Taxi Park for a dry spell.

You can still visit the Uganda Museum or browse craft stalls at the National Theatre when rain sets in. Avoid building a day around a distant outdoor sight if you can't shift plans. June is much drier, so it's a better pick for reliable sightseeing.

Holiday and quieter streets

Labour Day on May 1 is a public holiday in Uganda. Some businesses and offices may close, though Kampala's markets and transport keep moving. There isn't a major May festival to plan your trip around; Uganda Martyrs Day is in June.

If you hate crowds, May can suit you. It's generally a quieter, lower-season month than January and February or July, which are among the better months to visit. You may find accommodation rates softer than in those busier periods, but don't expect every place to be open on the holiday.

Make rain part of the plan

With frequent showers, give yourself indoor options rather than trying to cram in distant sights. A visit to Kasubi Tombs works best when you can choose a clearer spell for the journey and grounds.

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day stop near your route, such as the Uganda Museum, instead of crossing town in wet traffic. Kampala's matatus—shared minibuses—can be slow when roads are wet, while boda-bodas, or motorcycle taxis, may feel exposed in a downpour. Use a taxi for longer trips when rain is falling.
