Honiara feels hot, sticky and often cloudy in December. Rain falls on 23 days on average, and the humidity stays high, so outdoor sightseeing can feel tiring. November is drier; January is wetter still.

You can still visit the National Museum or browse Honiara Central Market between showers. Keep beach time flexible, and don't count on clear views or a dry day for a long walk. The Mataniko Falls route can turn slippery after rain, so avoid it when water is high.

Christmas in Honiara

Christmas is the main December holiday. Churches hold services, and families gather for meals; the city can feel quieter around Christmas Day as some shops and services close. Solomon Islands' Independence Day is in July, not December, so don't expect that celebration now.

If you're travelling with kids, a relaxed visit to the market can work better than a full day outdoors. You'll find local produce and fish, though opening hours may change over the holiday period.

Crowds and practical tips

December isn't Honiara's best-weather season; August and September are better choices for drier sightseeing. Holiday travel can make flights and rooms busier, and sometimes pricier, than in quieter months. But don't expect resort-style crowds: Honiara is mainly a working city, and rain keeps many visitors' plans flexible.

If you hate crowds, visit Central Market on an ordinary weekday rather than around Christmas. Go early, before the heat and showers build, and try kokoda, fish cured in citrus and coconut milk. Keep cash for small purchases, and ask about holiday opening times before crossing town for a specific shop.
