October feels damp

October stays warm, but the air feels sticky and the sky is often cloudy. Rain falls on many days, so showers can interrupt a walk or turn a dirt track muddy. September is drier, while November is wetter, making October a changeable middle ground.

You can still explore Honiara's Central Market, browse its stalls and try local fish or cassava. The National Museum is a useful stop when rain sets in. For a swim or snorkel, check sea conditions locally; frequent rain can make coastal water less clear.

Plan around the showers

Mataniko Falls is tempting, but wet paths and rising water can make a visit awkward. Avoid setting out for the falls after heavy rain, and ask locally about conditions before you go. Around town, keep sightseeing flexible: a shower may pass, but damp afternoons are part of the deal.

Travelling with kids? Keep the Central Market or museum as an easy indoor option when the rain gets heavy.

Quieter than the dry months

October has no major nationwide holiday or well-known annual festival to draw visitors to Honiara. Independence Day is in July. With August and September generally better for weather, October is likely to feel quieter, and accommodation may be better value than in the drier months. Still, prices vary, so don't assume every stay will be cheaper.

One Honiara-specific tip: after rain, use the paved routes through the city rather than relying on a shortcut toward Mataniko Falls. Mud can slow you down, and local advice is more useful than a map once streams are high.
