Visiting Gibraltar in September
September weather
September still feels summery in Gibraltar, but it's less intense than August. Days reach 25°C, and evenings stay mild around 20°C. There's plenty of sun for the Rock of Gibraltar, the Alameda Botanic Gardens and a swim at Catalan Bay.
Rain is limited to about four days, though humidity can make walking feel sticky. Save long climbs on the Upper Rock for a cooler part of the day, and don't count on every day being clear for views across the Strait. September suits sightseeing and beach time; it's less ideal if you want crisp hiking weather.
National Day
Gibraltar National Day falls on 10 September. Expect red and white flags, crowds in town and celebrations around Casemates Square. It's a lively day to see local pride up close, but quieter sightseeing can be harder in the centre.
If you hate crowds, visit the main sights on another day and enjoy the National Day atmosphere from the edge of town. The holiday can also make some opening hours and services different, so check local notices before setting out.
Crowds and local tips
The summer rush usually eases after August, so September can feel calmer and prices may be lower than in peak summer. It's still a popular month, especially around National Day, and the mild weather keeps beaches and the Rock appealing. Compared with October, September is generally sunnier and much drier.
Travelling with kids? Take the cable car up to the Upper Rock, then explore nearby viewpoints without tackling the steep walk from town. Keep food tucked away around the Barbary macaques; they're wild animals, not pets, and can snatch snacks. If you're staying in town, try calentita, a local chickpea bake, at a café in the old centre.
