Best Time to Visit Dili
Timor Leste · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Dili is May to August, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 29°C and 34°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over December to March; January is the wettest month with about 247 mm (9.7 in) of rain. January is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Dili: a seasonal guide
Wet season: December to March
Dili's wet season is heavy and sticky. January is the wettest month, with rain on most days, and February isn't far behind. Skies stay grey, the air feels thick, and the nights barely cool down.
Rain often comes in downpours that flood low roads near the seafront. Mountain roads out of town can turn muddy or slip. That makes day trips to Hatubuilico, near Mount Ramelau, a poor bet. Diving and snorkelling off Areia Branca beach or around Atauro Island also suffer when the water gets cloudy. If you're on a tight budget and don't mind staying in, you'll find quiet streets and easy room deals. Most people will be happier elsewhere.
May to August: the best window
This is when Dili feels good. Days are warm but less muggy, rain is rare, and by July and August you can plan a whole day outside. August is the driest month, tied with September on rainfall, and it's also the sunniest of the cooler months. Evenings feel pleasantly mild.
Want to dive? Visibility is usually best in these months, and the boat to Atauro Island, about a half-day trip each way by ferry, runs more smoothly. Hikers can try the climb up Mount Ramelau for sunrise, a long, steep walk from the village at the base. Walking the waterfront promenade and the Cristo Rei statue stairs is much easier when it's dry. Travelling with kids? This is the easiest stretch, since beach days rarely get rained off.
September to November: hot and still dry
September and October are the hottest months, and October tops out at 34°C. Sun is strong, and midday on the seafront can feel harsh. Rain is still scarce in both months, so you can swim and dive, just plan your outdoor time for early morning or late afternoon. Cooler hours on Areia Branca suit that well.
By November, showers return and the humidity creeps back. It's still a fair month, and a good one if you want a few clear days without the peak-season feel.
Dili doesn't get big tourist crowds in any month. Rooms are limited, so expect a small bump around late May, when Timor-Leste celebrates the restoration of independence on 20 May, and around 30 August, the anniversary of the 1999 referendum. Both days bring official events and busier streets.
