When to visit Timor Leste

Dili is the main stop

Dili is the only place on our site for Timor-Leste, and it's where almost every trip starts. The best months here are May to August. Our data covers Dili only, so for the mountains and the south coast, treat what follows as general guidance.

The coast around Dili is hot and fairly dry. The mountains inland are cooler and often wetter. If you're heading up toward Maubisse or the slopes of Mount Ramelau, expect chillier mornings than the capital ever gives you.

The two seasons

Timor-Leste really has a wet season and a dry season. The wet season runs roughly from December to March. January is the wettest month in Dili, with 247 mm of rain. Storms can turn dirt roads to mud, and some rural routes get cut off. Boat trips and hikes get harder to plan.

The dry season is when you'll want to be here. From May to August, days are easier to plan and the roads are in better shape. It's a good time for diving and snorkelling off Dili, and for the ferry or flight to Atauro Island, which is known for its reefs. Hiking Ramelau, where people climb at night to see sunrise from the summit, is also much nicer when skies are clear.

October is the hottest month, at 34°C. It's sticky, and the build-up to the rains can feel heavy. Midday is best spent in the shade with a cold drink.

Holidays and crowds

Timor-Leste is not a mass-tourism country, so "high season" is quiet by most standards. The dry months bring the most visitors, but you'll still find empty beaches and small guesthouses. Wet-season months are the true low season, with fewer travellers and slower travel.

Independence Restoration Day on 20 May is the big national date. Dili hosts ceremonies and events, so expect busy streets and some closures. Catholic holidays matter too, since most people are Catholic. Christmas and Easter bring processions and family travel, and Good Friday is especially solemn.

If you want the easiest trip, aim for May to August. Prefer quiet and don't mind rain? Try the edges of the wet season, but keep your plans loose.
