November brings the rain

November is warm and sticky, with highs around 30°C and rain on many days. The showers often come in bursts, so you may still get a clear stretch for a walk along the Msasani Peninsula or lunch by the water. Rainfall rises sharply from October, and the city can feel muggy between showers.

If you hate crowds, you'll likely enjoy quieter sights and less pressure at popular restaurants. But wet roads can slow trips across Dar, and heavy rain can spoil a long beach day at Kigamboni. Keep outdoor plans flexible and save the National Museum for a rainy spell.

November doesn't have a major fixed nationwide festival in Dar es Salaam. Some years, Diwali falls in November, bringing celebrations among Hindu communities, but its date changes each year. Tanzania's major public holidays, including Independence Day, fall outside this month.

The main trade-off is the weather: November sits in the rainy season, so visitor numbers are generally lower than in the June-to-September high season. You may find better hotel rates than during those drier months, though prices vary. For a city break, the quieter pace can be a plus; for a beach-focused trip, expect less reliable conditions.

Make room for rain

Travelling with kids? A shower can turn a planned beach afternoon into a slow, damp trip across town. The ferry from central Dar to Kigamboni is useful for reaching the coast, but check conditions locally before setting out in heavy rain.

For an easy indoor stop, visit the National Museum near Kivukoni, then try a plate of mishkaki, grilled meat sold at local stalls, when the weather clears. November's rain falls across about 18 days, but that doesn't mean it rains all day. Build your sightseeing around dry breaks rather than ruling out outdoor plans altogether.
