Visiting Dar es Salaam in July
July: dry, warm days
July is one of the easier months to explore Dar es Salaam. Days feel warm rather than scorching, and evenings stay mild. Rain is limited, so you can wander around the National Museum or take a boat to Bongoyo Island without building your day around showers.
The sea and city can still feel humid. Sightseeing on foot may feel sticky by afternoon, so keep longer walks around Kariakoo or the city centre for cooler parts of the day. July gets less rain than June, but slightly more than August.
Saba Saba and seasonal crowds
On July 7, Saba Saba brings the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair to the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds. Expect local businesses, food stalls and busy fairgrounds; it's a good stop if you enjoy seeing what's made and sold in Tanzania.
If you hate crowds, skip the fair at its busiest and spend the day around the quieter stretch of Coco Beach instead. July falls within Dar's popular June-to-September travel season, so hotels can cost more than in wetter months. The trade fair also draws local visitors, especially around the holiday.
Getting around in July
The relatively dry weather suits a day trip to Bongoyo or Mbudya, as well as a visit to Kivukoni Fish Market. Boats leave from the Slipway for Bongoyo; check the day's return options before you head out, since you'll need a boat back.
Travelling with kids? Keep the ferry ride to Bongoyo as your main outing, then leave time for a relaxed meal near the Slipway. Try mishkaki, grilled meat skewers, at a local spot nearby. July's comfortable weather makes outdoor plans easier, but the humidity can still make a long afternoon tiring.
