Best Time to Visit Belize

Dry season is the sweet spot

If you want easy, sunny days, aim for February or March. Belmopan, the small inland capital, is at its best then. Rain is light, the skies are mostly clear, and the jungle roads are easy to drive. It's also the time for Mayan sites like Caracol and Xunantunich, where you'll want dry steps and firm ground.

The dry season runs roughly from late November to April or May. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks, and Easter fills up too. Lodges and island hotels book out, so expect higher prices and fewer rooms at those times.

April heat and the wet months

April is the hottest month in Belmopan, at 35°C. Afternoons feel heavy and still. Plan jungle hikes and ruin visits for the morning, then cool off in the Blue Hole National Park pool or float down a river on a cave-tubing trip near Belmopan.

The wet season brings the rain. October is the wettest month in Belmopan, with 257 mm. Downpours can turn dirt roads to mud, and some cave and river trips close when the water rises. The upside? Green hills, quiet trails and lower prices. Hurricane season runs June to November, and the risk is highest in the late summer and early autumn. Travel insurance is worth having then.

Holidays and quieter times

Belize has a few holidays that change the mood. September 10 (St. George's Caye Day) and September 21 (Independence Day) bring parades and parties, so buses and hotels fill up even in the wet season. Easter is a big family weekend, and many Belizeans head to the coast. Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 is best known in Dangriga and Hopkins, with drumming, dancing and food.

If you hate crowds, try May or early November. You'll catch the shoulder season, with fewer visitors and rain that's often short and sharp. Only have one week? Go in February or March, and base yourself in Belmopan for the inland sights before heading to the cayes (small coral islands) for the sea.
