It's still a good month for walking the cobbled lanes around Markt and the canals, with warm cafés nearby when showers arrive. The Groeningemuseum makes a handy indoor stop. Long picnics or a full day outdoors are less reliable than in summer, so keep some time for indoor sights.

What to do and when

October has no major citywide festival I can confidently recommend. Belgium's autumn school break often falls around late October, though its dates vary. Family attractions can get busier then, especially if the break overlaps with a weekend.

If you hate crowds, you'll usually find Bruges calmer than in the busy summer months. Prices can also be lower outside peak season, but the school break may bring a short-lived rise in demand.

A useful local tip

Take a canal boat trip if the weather is dry; seeing Bruges from the water gives you a different view of its old bridges and gabled houses. Tours may run less often in autumn, so check at the Rozenhoedkaai quay before building your day around one.
