The long daylight gives you more time to wander, and the weather suits walking the cobbled streets or cycling out towards Damme.

It's a good month for sightseeing, but not every day will feel sunny. If you're hoping to sit outside for hours, keep a flexible plan for wet spells. June is warmer, though May is already comfortable for getting around on foot.

Events and crowds

Labour Day, on May 1, is a public holiday in Belgium, so some shops and services may close. Bruges' famous Procession of the Holy Blood takes place on Ascension Day, which can fall in May or June. If it's in May, expect a special day in the historic centre and larger crowds along the procession route.

If you hate crowds, May is a better bet than the peak summer months, but Bruges won't feel quiet around the Markt or canal boat stops. It's a popular spring visit, and prices are generally higher than in the quieter winter months.

Make the most of your visit

For a calmer walk, follow the canals from the centre towards Minnewater and the Beguinage. The route gives you a break from the busiest squares, and the park is lovely for a slow pause between sights.

Travelling with kids? A canal boat ride is an easy way to see the old town without another long walk. Queues can build at popular boarding points, so try a less central stop if the main ones look busy. Afterward, warm up with a bowl of Flemish stew in a café near the Burg.
