When to visit Belgium
Two cities, one pattern
Brussels and Bruges follow the same rhythm, so timing is simple. Summer is the sweet spot for both. Bruges is best from June to September. Brussels is best in June, July and September, since August can feel quieter in the capital when many locals are away.
Neither place gets truly hot. July is the warmest month in both, at 24°C in Brussels and 22°C in Bruges. Bruges sits nearer the coast, so it feels a touch cooler and breezier. That's nice for walking the canals and climbing the Belfry (the medieval bell tower on the Markt square).
Seasons and rain
Spring is fresh and changeable. You'll get bright mornings and sudden showers, so it suits you if you like gardens and fewer crowds. Autumn is calmer and often golden, and September is a smart pick for both cities.
Winter is grey and damp. Brussels is wettest in December at 79 mm, and Bruges peaks in November at 80 mm. Those are close, so don't expect a big difference. The upside is cosy cafés, hot chocolate and Christmas markets. Brussels' Winter Wonders runs around the Grand-Place and Bourse. Bruges has its own market on the Markt, plus a skating rink.
Holidays, events and crowds
High season runs from June to August, plus Easter and the Christmas weeks. Bruges gets packed on summer days, especially when day-trippers and cruise groups arrive around midday. Stay overnight and you'll have the quiet streets at dusk and early morning to yourself.
Belgium's national day is 21 July, with fireworks and a parade in Brussels. Expect crowds and some closed shops. The Brussels Flower Carpet happens in the Grand-Place in August in some years, so check the dates if it's on your wish list. Belgian school summer holidays run through July and August, so trains and hotels fill up more on weekends.
If you hate crowds, aim for September or late spring. Prices and queues ease, and the weather still plays fair. Travelling in January or February? Pack for rain and enjoy empty museums, like Brussels' Magritte Museum.
