Mild days for exploring

May feels warm and springlike in Algiers, with sunny spells and some passing rain. Afternoons are pleasant for walking the Casbah's steep lanes or visiting the Jardin d'Essai. You'll get long days for sightseeing, but the midday sun can feel strong on exposed streets. Save a shaded stop for the hottest part of the afternoon, and keep indoor plans in mind if showers arrive.

The sea may still feel cool for a long swim, so treat May as a city-break month rather than a beach holiday. If you're hoping to hike, choose a route in the nearby hills and check local conditions after rain.

Holidays and local rhythms

May 1 is Labour Day, a public holiday in Algeria, so some shops and services may close. May 8 is National Day of Remembrance, marking the 1945 massacres; it's a solemn observance, not a festival.

Spring is one of Algiers' best times to visit, and May can feel busier than the quieter winter months. It's still generally calmer than the peak summer period, when hotter weather and school holidays draw more visitors. Prices can rise with demand, but May is often a good middle ground.

If you hate crowds, visit the Casbah early in the day, before tour groups reach its narrow lanes.

A useful Algiers tip

For the Casbah, take the Metro to Place des Martyrs, then continue on foot into the old quarter. The steep, winding streets are easier to explore in May's mild weather than in June's stronger heat.

After walking, stop for a bowl of chorba, a local soup often served with bread. May's occasional rain can make a café break especially welcome. Don't try to cover every lane in one go: the Casbah's climbs and turns make a relaxed visit more enjoyable.
