Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
March to May is the best stretch for walking. Days warm from mild to properly sunny, and the air feels fresher as the rain eases off. By May you'll get long, bright afternoons that still don't tip into heat. That's a good time for the Casbah, the old hillside quarter of narrow lanes and Ottoman houses. It's all steps and slopes, so cooler weather helps. It's also ideal for the Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, the big botanical garden, and for the climb up to Notre-Dame d'Afrique.
September and October are just as good, and the sea is still warm. If you want a day on the coast at Tipaza, with its Roman ruins beside the water, this is when it works best. Hot, dry spells can still show up in early September.
Summer: hot, but a beach season
July and August are the hottest months, both with highs of 36°C and almost no rain. June comes close behind. Afternoons feel heavy by the port, and you'll want to spend them in the shade or in the water. Midday sightseeing in the Casbah is hard work.
This is also when Algerians go to the beach, and the coast gets busy. Many expats and relatives visit from abroad, so flights and rooms fill up. If you hate crowds, skip the peak weeks. If you love long evenings, summer has them, with families out along the seafront late into the night.
Winter: green, wet and quiet
November has the most rain of the year, with 95 mm over 12 days. December to February is cooler and grey, with highs of 15 to 16°C. It rarely feels cold, but it can feel damp, and sea breezes bite on the Bay of Algiers.
The upside is space. You'll have museums, such as the National Museum of Antiquities and Fine Arts, mostly to yourself. Travelling on a budget? This is the quietest time. Just keep a rainy-day plan, because sunshine is short at around five hours a day in midwinter.
Events and timing
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year. Daytime life slows, and many cafés and restaurants close until sunset. Then the city comes alive at night, with a festive mood after iftar, the evening meal that breaks the fast. Eid celebrations follow. Check the dates before you book, as they can change your trip more than the weather does. For most visitors, April, May and October are the safest picks.
