Algiers: spring and early autumn

Algiers is the only city on our site for Algeria, so this guide leans on it. The best months here are April, May and October. Days are warm without being heavy, and the sea breeze keeps the Casbah's steep stairways pleasant. That's the old hillside quarter, and it's tiring to climb in the heat.

July is the hottest month, at 36°C. Afternoons feel sticky, and locals head to the beaches west of the city, like Sidi Fredj, or leave town altogether. Autumn brings the rain. November is the wettest month, with 95 mm, so expect grey days and slick streets around the Grande Poste.

Big country, different seasons

Algeria is huge, and Algiers only tells part of the story. The coast is Mediterranean, with mild, damp winters. The Sahara in the south is a different world. If you're heading to Tamanrasset or the Hoggar mountains, winter is the comfortable time. Summer there is brutal. We don't have figures for those places, so check local forecasts before you book.

Roman ruins at Tipasa and Djémila are best in spring, when the hillsides are green and walking among the stones is easy.

Holidays, crowds and high season

Summer is the busy time for Algerians themselves. Many families holiday on the coast in July and August, and they're joined by relatives living abroad. Beach towns fill up and rooms get scarce, even though it's hot.

Ramadan shifts by about ten days each year. Daytime life slows, and many cafés and restaurants close until sunset. Evenings are lively, though, and sharing iftar (the evening meal that breaks the fast) can be a highlight. Eid al-Fitr, at the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha bring a few days of closures and packed buses and trains. Independence Day on 5 July and Revolution Day on 1 November are also national holidays.

If you want fewer crowds and good weather, aim for April, May or October. Winter is quiet and cheaper, but pack for rain.
