Yaounde Weather in March

March: warm and very wet

March feels warm, sticky and often cloudy in Yaoundé. Rain falls on many days, so showers can interrupt a walk through the city or a visit to the Mvog-Betsi Zoo. The hills around town can get slippery, making longer hikes a poor bet. You'll have better luck keeping outdoor plans flexible and using rainy spells for the National Museum or a slow lunch of ndolé, a leafy stew.

For families, the zoo works best when the paths are dry and you're happy to change plans if rain rolls in.

Women's Day in the city

International Women's Day on March 8 is marked across Cameroon, including in Yaoundé. You may see women in matching pagne, printed fabric, and public celebrations around the city. It's a lively local event, but some streets and services can be busier or disrupted around gatherings.

Quieter, with a wet-season trade-off

March is generally less crowded than the December and January high season, when the weather is drier and more visitors come. You may find accommodation deals, though prices vary and aren't guaranteed to fall. Rain also increases from February, when the month is much drier, and continues into April, which is wetter still. Expect damp pavements and slower journeys when showers hit.

A useful local tip: if rain catches you near Marché Mokolo, take a taxi rather than trying to cross the busy market streets on foot. The market is crowded even in wet weather, and puddles make its narrow lanes harder to navigate.
