February feels like winter

February in Xianyang is cold, with chilly nights that can dip below freezing. Days are milder, but cloud and limited sunshine can make the air feel raw. Rain is usually light, so you're more likely to meet grey skies than a washout.

It's a good month for indoor sights such as Xianyang Museum, where you can see Han dynasty figures and artefacts. On a brighter day, the Qianling Mausoleum's open grounds are worth exploring, but cold winds can make a long visit uncomfortable. Save relaxed riverside walks for a sunny spell.

Spring Festival changes the pace

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, sometimes falls in February. The holiday brings family travel, and some shops or restaurants may close for a few days. Dates change each year, so the city can feel very different depending on when you arrive.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the main holiday rush. Outside it, February is winter low season: Xianyang is generally quieter, and stays can cost less than during the popular spring and autumn months.

For a local meal, try biangbiang noodles, a Shaanxi speciality often served with chilli oil. Ask for less chilli if you prefer a milder bowl. It's outside the city, and a cold, cloudy day is less rewarding there than a clear one. February's short-feeling daylight also makes a late start less appealing, especially if you want time to explore the grounds.
