Visiting Valencia in August
August heat in the city
Valencia is hot and sunny in August, with afternoons often reaching 34°C and nights staying warm. It's slightly cooler than July, but there's little rain to break the heat. Sightseeing can feel hard work in the middle of the day, especially around the open plazas and the City of Arts and Sciences.
Save the Central Market, the Cathedral and walks through El Carmen for the morning or evening. The Turia Gardens offer shade in places, while Malvarrosa Beach is a good choice for a swim and a slower afternoon. For families, the beach can be an easier August outing than a long day of city sightseeing.
Festivals and local life
The Feast of the Assumption on August 15 is a public holiday in Spain. Some shops and services may close, and opening hours can change. Valencia's main summer fair, Gran Fira, takes place in July, so don't expect its full programme in August.
Many Valencians leave the city for holidays, and some local businesses take a break too. The beaches and popular visitor areas still draw plenty of people, though. August is high season, so rooms and flights can cost more than in the quieter months. For a calmer city break and better value, March to May or October to November are usually more appealing.
A better way to plan your day
Keep outdoor sights for the cooler parts of the day, then rest indoors during the sticky afternoon. The sun can feel intense along the City of Arts and Sciences' broad, exposed paths. Head there later, or spend the hottest hours inside the Oceanogràfic.
For a simple local tip, take the tram to Malvarrosa rather than walking from the centre in the heat. Stay for dinner nearby and try paella by the sea; Valencia is known for the dish, and the evening is much more comfortable than lunchtime.
