Visiting Tallinn in November
November feels
November is a hard month to love in Tallinn. Daytime highs reach only 4°C and nights hover around 2°C, so the cold is what you'll notice first. It's milder than October, when highs still reach 9°C, but warmer than December, when they drop to 1°C. Rain falls on 15 days, and cloud covers much of the sky, leaving you with only about seven hours of daylight and very little sun.
That gloom shapes how you spend your days. Long walks around the Old Town are less inviting, especially when wet cobbles turn slippery. Keep your time outdoors to short wanders between cafés and sights, then step inside to the Kumu Art Museum or the Estonian History Museum. Kadriorg Park can still be lovely, but muddy paths and early darkness make a leisurely visit hard.
Events and evenings
The grey days are easier to bear thanks to a few seasonal treats. St Martin's Day falls in November, and Tallinn's St Martin's Fair celebrates Estonian crafts, food and folk traditions. Dates can vary, so check the fair's schedule before you go. In late November, the Christmas market usually opens in Town Hall Square, bringing lights and stalls to the Old Town.
If you enjoy cosy evenings more than long, sunny days, this season suits you. The market and candlelit Old Town cafés are the highlights, and they're far more appealing after dark than the daytime sightseeing.
Crowds and local tips
With the summer crowds gone, November is much quieter than the peak season, when Tallinn's long days draw more visitors. You'll usually find fewer tour groups in the Old Town, and accommodation can cost less than in summer. The trade-off is a shorter sightseeing day and weather that can spoil outdoor plans.
Wear shoes with good grip for the Old Town's polished stone streets. If rain sets in, take tram 1 or 3 to Kadriorg and spend your time indoors at Kumu, rather than trying to cross the park in the dark. Afterwards, Estonia's black bread and warming pea soup make a satisfying café stop after a chilly wander.
