Visiting Tallinn in March
March weather in Tallinn
March is still cold, with daytime highs around 1°C and nights near -4°C. Rain falls on about ten days, and the air often feels damp and grey. With temperatures hovering around freezing, wet pavements can turn icy, especially in the Old Town's narrow lanes.
You'll have more daylight than in February, but sunshine remains limited. Keep sightseeing flexible: museums, cafés and the Kumu Art Museum in Kadriorg work well when the weather turns unpleasant. Save long walks along the Pirita promenade for a clearer, less slippery day. Beach time can wait; the coast is cold and exposed.
What's on in March
Vastlapäev, Estonia's Shrove Tuesday, sometimes falls in March. It's a moving holiday, so it won't land in the month every year. If it does during your visit, look for vastlakukkel, a sweet bun filled with cream, in Tallinn bakeries. Pea soup is another traditional treat.
March doesn't have the big summer festival calendar. Still, you can enjoy the Old Town without the peak-season flow of visitors. Families who'd rather explore indoors can spend a chilly afternoon at the Seaplane Harbour museum.
Crowds and practical tips
March is quieter than June to August, Tallinn's best months for weather. Prices are often gentler than in summer, too, though they vary with events and demand. The trade-off is poor comfort outdoors: this is a month for shorter walks and warm café stops, not lingering on Toompea Hill.
For a budget traveller, March can mean calmer streets and better-value stays, if you're happy with the cold. On slippery days, take the tram towards Kadriorg rather than tackling the steep, cobbled route up from the Old Town. Check the footing before walking down from Toompea; those stones get slick when wet.
